MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - - A four-run first inning was more than enough for nationally No. 8 ranked Millersville as they defeated the Wilmington University baseball team, 5-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Cooper Park.
It was a bases-clearing double in the top of the first that set the Marauders (35-6) apart from the Wildcats (24-18). The Wildcats could only muster our hits against Millersville starter Matt Seibert, as he went for a complete game, four-hit shutout.
Wilmington starter Zach Czarnecki went the first three innings and was harmed by a first-inning error that extended the Millersville inning. A two-out double to right center scored the first run and then after a pair of walks, a three-run double made it 4-0 in the first frame. All four runs were unearned.
Czarnecki left two runners on in the second before going 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third inning, completing his afternoon.
Erik Grady started the day with a leadoff single, but he was caught off second for the first out and then Millersville induced a ground ball double play to end the inning. After the first two runners reached for the Wildcats, Millersville starter Matt Seibert set the next 14 Wildcats down in order, ending with a Dom Grady two-out single in the top of the fifth inning.
After the first inning, the Wildcats didn't have a base runner reach second base. Erik Grady went 2-for-3 while Eddie Parry and Dom Grady added singles.
Matt Boyko pitched a scoreless fourth inning before Tyler Reinert tossed a scoreless fifth. Justin Barcoski threw two scoreless innings before Eddie Parry allowed one run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Wildcats are right back to action on Wednesday afternoon, as they welcome regionally ranked Queens (N.Y.) to Wilson Field for another nonconference battle. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
