LAKE WORTH, Fla. - - Three runs in the seventh and eighth innings weren't enough for the Wilmington University baseball team as it fell to Assumption, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Santaluces Sports Complex.
The Greyhounds (3-5) scored all their runs in the third three innings while the Wildcats (7-3) scored late to make things interesting. The Wildcats had their three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
Assumption scored a run in the top of the first, a two-out run in the top of the second, and a two-out two-run triple in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats had one hit through the first six innings but were able to get on the board and cut the deficit in half in the seventh. Three straight walks loaded the bases before a fielding error allowed the Wildcats to score the first run. Cam Trego then walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run, 4-2, but the Greyhounds escaped further damage by picking up a strikeout and a fly ball to exit the inning.
Tyler Pirrung started the eighth inning with a single and was standing on third with two outs. Sean Glatts laid down a bunt and beat it out, scoring Pirrung to make it a one-run game, 4-3.
Steven Mann went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to give the offense one last chance, but Assumption closed the door on the Wildcats' comeback. Shawn Edevane walked with two outs, but a fly ball ended the game, leaving the tying run on first.
Five Wildcat relievers threw 6.0 scoreless innings to keep, including Steve Schenning tossing three innings with three strikeouts.
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday as they face New Haven for the second time this season. They will play at Lynn University in Boca Raton, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
