Baseball Comes Back Twice to Sweep Chestnut Hill, Win CACC Series

NORTH WALES, Pa. - - The Wilmington University baseball team trailed early in each Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at Chestnut Hill on Saturday, coming back to sweep the Griffins, 7-4 and 12-9, as Hostelley Field.

The Wildcats (18-13, 7-5 CACC) trailed 2-1 early before scoring four runs late to take the opener and then found themselves down 5-1 after the first inning in the nightcap before battling back late once again to earn the sweep and the series win.

GAME 1:
The offense cranked out 14 hits in the opener, using two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to expand their lead out to 7-2.

The Griffins (10-24, 4-11 CACC) took a 2-1 lead with a two-out RBI in the bottom of the second, but the Wildcats answered right back with Kory Pritchard's second RBI groundout in the game in the top of the third.

Derek Huff shut down the Griffins in the rest of his outing, going eight complete innings to earn his third win of the season.

The Wildcats took the lead with a sacrifice fly from Matt Warrington in the sixth and then added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth.

AJ Tropiano reached on an error in which Pritchard scored and then a double steal made it 5-2. Tyler Pirrung knocked in Erik Grady with a single in the ninth and then Jack McDonald knocked in Brandon Grygo with another single and the Wildcats were on top, 7-2.

Tyler Pirrung went 4-for-4 with an RBI while Brandon Grygo, Mason DeLuca, and Sean Glatts all had two hits.

GAME 2:
The Griffins scored five runs on five hits and a Wildcat error in the bottom of the first inning, opening up a 5-1 lead. The Griffins scored a run in the third to make it 6-2, and then answered a two run top of the fifth with two runs of their own to take an 8-4 lead after the fifth inning.

Down to their final two at-bats, the Wildcats turned it on with a six-run top of the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh to take the lead and come back to win the three-game series, 2-1.

After the Griffins hit two solo homers in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-4 lead, Sean Glatts led off the top of the sixth with a solo homer of his own. Nick Classie singled and then two batters later Tyler Pirrung hit a two-run shot to left to bring the Wildcats to within 8-7. Jack McDonald restarted the inning with a single before Pritchard and Zack Walker followed with infield singles to load the bases. Erik Grady hit an RBI groundout and then Warrington reached on an error, scoring two more as the Wildcats jumped up to a 10-8 lead.

Tyler Pirrung stayed hot with an RBI double in the top of the second and then Tyler Adamo hit a sacrifice fly and the Wildcats turned the game around and led,12-8, going to the bottom of the seventh.

Pirrung went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs while Sean Glatts went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Brandon Grygo and Nick Classie added two hits each for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats welcome Post to Wilson Field for another CACC doubleheader on Sunday. The first pitch against the Eagles is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
