
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - After producing 19 runs in the opening game of the 2025 season, the Wilmington University baseball team's bats were silenced in the night as the Wildcats split the doubleheader with Franklin Pierce, winning 19-1 before falling 1-0 in 10 innings on Friday night at the Ripken Experience.
GAME 1:
The 2025 season couldn't have started any better for the Wildcats, scoring in all by one inning of the opening game. They broke things open with a six-run second inning, adding four more in the third, leading 11-1 after three innings.
The Wildcats were able to take advantage of 14 walks and seven wild pitches in the game. Shawn Edevane scored the first of six runs in the second inning on a wild pitch and then Brandon Grygo knocked in two with a single. Josearmando Diaz plated another with a single before JJ Killen crossed following another wild pitch. Chase Fleming finished the scoring in the second with an RBI infield single, making it a 7-0 game.
Grygo tripled in a run in the third as well, scoring on a Kory Pritchard infield single to make it 9-1. Diaz added another RBI single before Edevane added a sacrifice fly and the Wildcats led 11-1 after 3 at bats.
Xavier Cortez' only hiccup was a two-out single in the second, as he cruised through five innings to pick up the win. He struck out eight while only allowing a run on two hits and two walks. Steve Schenning came on and finished off the Ravens, pitching the final four innings for the save, striking out four while only allowing two hits.
Grygo finished 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored while Pritchard, Killen, Diaz, and Edevane all had two hits. Pritchard, Diaz, and Zack Czarnecki all had two RBI in the win.
GAME 2:
The Wildcats received another outstanding pitching performance in the nightcap, but the offense was held silent as the Ravens picked up the split.
Scott Borgmann went five scoreless innings, striking out eight batters while only allowing two hits and three walks. Dom Marotta came on and tossed two scoreless frames, striking out one while facing the minimum. Zack Czarnecki pitched a scoreless first two innings but a two-out single in the 10th produced the only run of the game.
Kory Pritchard hit an infield single in the first and Brandon Grygo singled back to the pitcher in the third for the lone two Wildcat hits. Chase Fleming reached on an error in the sixth which would end up being the final base runner in the game for the Wildcats.
The Ravens' Kyle Salvati struck out 12 in his six innings before Sean Foody struck out four in the final four scoreless and hitless innings for the win.
