Men’s Lacrosse Wins Fourth Straight with 13-6 Victory over Lake Erie

NEWARK, Del. - - A takeaway and goal in transition in the final seconds of the first quarter helped propel the Wilmington University men's lacrosse team to its fourth straight win, 13-6, over Lake Erie in its final nonconference game of the season on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.

Looking to tie the game at the end of the first quarter, Lake Erie (4-6) turned the ball over at midfield and the Wildcats (4-3) were off to the races trying to beat the clock. Andrew Dzubak slammed home a pass from josh Weston with 2.6 seconds remaining, swinging momentum to the Wildcats side, 4-2.

From there, the Wildcats scored the first four goals of the second quarter, taking as large as an 8-2 lead. Lake Erie scored the final two goals of the second quarter, but it was a save by Daniel Flynn with seconds remaining that sent that Wildcats into the halftime break leading 8-4.

Lake Erie scored the first goal of the third quarter to get within 8-5, but Andrew Dzubak stopped the run with his fifth goal of the game, putting the Wildcats back in front, 9-5.

Leading 9-6 after the third quarter, the Wildcats held the Storm scoreless in the fourth quarter, winning the fourth frame, 4-0, to win the game, 13-6.

Dzubak finished with five goals and an assist while Josh Lovely, Layton Avant, and Santiago Figueroa all scored two goals in the game. Josh Weston added a goal and two assists while Carter Earl dished out two assists.

Paul Army led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Julian Businsky, Ryan McCrary, and Quinn Tracy had two caused turnovers each while Tyler Quinn led with five ground balls. Daniel Flynn made nine saves in goal for the win.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play the rest of the season, starting with back-to-back home games next week. They play Holy Family on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening face-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
