Strong Second Half Gives Post 3-1 Men’s Soccer Victory over Wilmington

Post University scored three goals in the second half to comeback and defeat the Wilmington University men's soccer team, 3-1, Friday afternoon at LaMoy Field. 

The Eagles (4-5, 3-4 CACC) held the Wildcats (6-4, 3-3 CACC) scoreless in the second half after Wilmington went into halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats came out of the gate hot with a shot by Juan Bernal followed by an early corner kick opportunity. Just two minutes later, Lance Berry scored off a set piece from Jordon Ellison to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead only 4:41 into the match. Berry's fifth goal of the season continues to lead the Wildcats.

Wilmington was able to keep the pressure on Post early in the game, putting two more shots on goal from Bernal and Geoff Velasquez before the 12-minute mark of the first half.

The Eagles came alive in the second half, tying the game in the 60th minute with a penalty kick goal by Tiago Martins. Wilmington's Adrian Tash was carded on the penalty in the box, allowing Martins to score his fourth goal of the season. 

Post took the lead in the 76th minute, countering on the Wildcats and Martins put his fifth goal of the year into the back of the net to secure the game-winner. The Eagles put in an insurance goal in the 80th minute on two unassisted goals by Tiago Martin and Raphael Moura.

Martins had seven shots total with five on goal for the Eagles in leading their offense.

Wildcats' sophomore goalie Zach Lee was able to keep Post scoreless with two saves off of five shots in the first period but was only able to make two stops in the second half on seven shots.

The shots were even, 12-12, but the Eagles were able to put more shots on goal, 7-4, in the match.

The loss was the third straight for the Wildcats after being ranked 23rd in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Poll.  The Wildcats try to get back on the winning track Wednesday, October 8, when they take on Long Island University (LIU) Post at the WU Athletics Complex.  The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
