LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. - - The NCAA Division II leading scoring offense was on full display on Tuesday night, as the Wilmington University men's soccer team put up seven second half goals on its way to a 9-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Chestnut Hill at Victory Field.
The 11th ranked Wildcats (12-1-1, 7-1-1 CACC) came into the contest scoring over four goals a game, upping their average with nine more goals on Tuesday night. Since going 0-1-1 to start October and only scoring one goal in the two games, the Wildcats have scored 32 goals during their five-game winning streak. The Wildcats have now scored 68 goals on the year, surpassing the program record of 60 set in 2009 and 2015.
The scoring started in the 30th minute on Tuesday night, as Joe Bell scored his first off another set piece. A foul in the corner set it up, as Fredrik Bentdal sent a ball to Ben Jordan atop the 18-yard box. He played a ball into the box, and it found its way to Joe Bell on the back post for his fifth of the season. A foul in the box setup Shawn Genus for a penalty kick in the 44th minute, sending the Wildcats into the break leading 2-0.
The Wildcats got to scoring rather quickly in the second half, as Ben Jordan got on the board in the 47th minute. NCAA Division II leading goal scorer Lorne Bickley added his 20th goal of the season in the 50th minute and then Ben Jordan made it 5-0 moments later in the 56th minute.
Mamadou Diombera got in on the action in the 72nd minute off assists from Keith Sanderson and Vegard Pernes, and then Pernes scored one himself in the 75th minute after passes from Diombera and Dimitrios Anastasiou. Another double assist set up Davion Wedderburm in the 86th minute, as Hakim Williams and Ellis McSharry set up Wedderburn to make it 8-0.
Joe Bell then capped the scoring on a corner in the 90th minute, heading home a ball from Taiki Kinugawa with 58 seconds left in the contest.
The Wildcats collected 10 assists in the game, tying the program's mark for the third time. It was also done on October 6, 2011 against Goldey-Beacom, and again on September 10, 2017 against Felician. They have now tied the program mark with 53 assists on the year, with three games left in the regular season.
The Wildcats outshot the Griffins, 27-3, in the contest and earned more corners, 8-2. Gabriel Prgomet made two saves for his sixth shutout of the season.
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday afternoon, as they travel to Nyack for another road contest. The Wildcats and Warriors are set for a 2:30 p.m. start.
