
FLUSHING, N.Y. – Junior forward Lorne Bickley added to his accolades this season as the Wilmington University men's soccer player was named the 2019 Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) East Region Player of the Year, as four other Wildcats earned a spot on the All-East Region teams, as voted on the region's sports information directors.
Along with Bickley to receive D2CCA All-East Region First Team, is senior defenseman Joe Bell and junior midfielder Shawn Genus. Wilmington was rounded out by the All-East Region selections with goalkeeper Gabriel Prgomet and forward Abdul Mansaray, who earned D2CCA All-East Second Team.
All five men have helped the Wildcats to a 17-2-1 record heading into the Super Regional 1 Tournament. The five honorees ties Wilmington's record for the most All-East Region honorees in a season, as there were five honorees in 2009. Wilmington led the D2CCA selections with five honorees, as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference posted 11 players altogether, which was the most by any East Region conference.
Lorne Bickley (St. Helier, Jersey/De La Salle College) adds to his record-breaking season, becoming the second player in program history to be named D2CCA Player of the Year. Wilmington's assistant coach, Anthony Allison was the first player to receive the award back in 2009. The junior forward has been an attacking threat for the Wildcats all season, as he leads all NCAA Division II in goals (26), goals per game (1.30), points (55), and points per game (2.70). He also broke Wilmington's program records of goals in a season, points in a season, and goals per game in a season. He has a game-high of four goals scored against Felician on September 21, while scoring at least one goal in eight consecutive matches.
Senior defenseman Joe Bell also adds to his award winning season, earning D2CCA First Team. Bell (Epsom, England/Blenheim) earned CACC Defensive Player of the Year this season, as well scoring eight goals and dishing out two assists for 18 points. Bell has been an important part of the Wildcats back line, helping WilmU to a 1.09 goals against average. In all 20 games, Bell has had four game winning goals this year, including in the 56th minute against Sothern New Hampshire on September 18, where the Wildcats defeated the Penmen, 2-1.
Junior midfielder Shawn Genus (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/St. Elizabeth Technical) earned the D2CCA First Team honors in his first year as a Wildcat. Genus is third on the team with 11 goals, while leading the team and sitting third in the country and second in the league with 12 assists. He also has recorded 34 points so far this year, sitting fifth in the CACC and is 1-1 in penalty kicks. Genus has had three games with at least two assists.
Sophomore Gabriel Prgomet (Melbourne, Australia/Westall Secondary College) earned D2CCA All-East Second Team as a goalkeeper. Prgomet has made 52 saves in the net so far this season, while putting up a 1.09 goals against average and a .703 save percentage. He is currently ranked second in the CACC in goals-against average and fourth in the conference in saves. He made a season-high seven saves against Georgian Court in the CACC quarterfinals.
Abdul Mansaray (London, England/William Ellis) rounds out the All-East Region honorees for Wilmington, earing D2CCA Second Team. Mansaray is second on the team and tied for sixth in all NCAA Division II with 17 goals, while being one of three in the top five in the CACC in assists with eight. The senior forward also ranks third in the country in points with 42, while also sitting third in the CACC. He as attempted 69 shots on the year, sitting third overall in the conference for a .594 shot on goal percentage. Mansaray has had five game this season with at least two goals, while scoring at least one goal in five consecutive contests.
The First Team members now advance to the national ballot as potential All-America honorees. Bickley will also move on to the National Player of the Year voting, in which he will be judged against the seven other Regional Players of the Year across the D2CCA landscape.
The Wildcats will head to Rindge, New Hampshire on Saturday for the Super Region 1 Tournament, where they will take on No. 4 Franklin Pierce at 6:00 p.m.
