Track and Field Competes at Osprey Open Hosted by Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. - - The Wilmington University Track & Field team competed at the Osprey Open this weekend at G. Larry James Stadium, where both track events and multi-events took place.

Shemar Parker competed in the first and only decathlon event of the year. Parker had an impressive two days, placing first place in eight of the ten events. Parker displayed an impressive personal best in the men's shot put, throwing over 10 meters, 10.45 meters. Parker was the only decathlete to be able to eclipse the 10-meter mark. Parker also out-sprinted the pack in the 400-meter run, beating the next decathlete by just around six seconds for a finishing time of 52.90 seconds. Parker also finished first in the decathlon discus, 100-meter, long jump, high jump, 110-meter hurdles, and pole vault.

Jalah Turner was the lone competitor in the heptathlon. Turner finished fifth overall with 2,840 points scored, good for fifth overall in the field. Turner's best finishes were in the 800-meter run and the 200-meter run. In the 800-meter, Turner finished second overall amongst the heptathletes, crossing the line at 2:42.02. In the 200-meter run, Turner finished with a time of 28.28, good for fourth overall amongst the decathletes. 

To the track, Matt Hibbert becomes the third member of the sprinters to qualify for the CACC Championships in the 100-meter and the 200-meter dash. First, Hibbert ran a 100-meter time of 11.25 seconds, which placed him fifth overall at the Osprey Open. Then, Hibbert finished the 200-meter in 22.70 seconds, good for 6th place overall.

Dan Wyshinski had a personal best time in the 1,500-meter run. Wyshinski finished third overall with a time of 4:04.33. 

Mike Dowd placed sixth in the top eight in the 400-meter hurdles. Dowd's time also qualified him for a spot in the CACC Championships in the event, with a finishing time of 1:01.13. Dowd also placed third overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:06.79.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Matt Hibbert, Bradley Spencer, Juan Fountain, and Jalen Bailey bested a field of 14 total relay teams by running a time of 42.75 seconds.

Akeel Blake takes first in the long jump again by being the only athlete to clear seven meters. Blake placed first out of 36 total jumpers with a distance of 7.10 meters. Blake finished second overall in the triple jump with a length of 14.31 meters.

Joshua Varghese finished second overall in the discus throw with a seasonal best distance. Varghese best toss of the day was at 43.68 meters. Varghese also had a seasonal best length in the hammer throw. Varghese finished fourth overall in the event with a distance of 47.07 meters.

Women: 

Temi Mustapha finished second overall in the 100-meter run at 12.78 seconds, qualifying for the CACC Championships. Mustapha also finished fifth overall in the 200-meter run out of 36 runners. Mustapha finished with a time of 27.79 seconds. Mustapha also finished fifth overall in the long with a best jump of 4.89 meters. Mustapha rounded out her impressive weekend in the triple jump with a seasonal best of 10.91 meters, placing fourth overall.

Yailynn Ramirez had her best time in the 800-meter run by about nine seconds. Ramirez finished third overall with a time of 2:23.84. Ramirez went third overall with 42 total runners in the field.

Layla Hunt had a seasonal best day in the 400-meter hurdles with a time that qualified her for the CACC Championships. Hunt finished third overall with a time of 1:10.74.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Tiffany Banning, Yailynn Ramirez, Camila Cornejo, and Alexa Crowell finished third overall. The relay team crossed the line at 4:33.07. 

Over to the throws, Jada Obegi finished fourth overall, throwing over 11 meters again—Obegi's best toss of 11.13 meters. She also finished eighth overall in the discus throw, with a best distance of 31.79 meters.

Freja Olofsson finished second overall in the discus throw out of 40 throwers. Olofsson broke her school record with a toss of 38.30 meters.
