PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A big third quarter allowed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division leading Holy Family Tigers to pull away from the Wilmington University women's basketball team, 85-48, on Wednesday night inside the Campus Center.
With the Wildcats (1-12, 0-3 CACC) trailing by just six points at the halftime break, the Tigers (13-1, 3-0 CACC) came out of the locker room with an 8-0 run and then closed the third quarter with a 9-1 run to take control. The Tigers took advantage of a 65-32 rebounding margin, including 28 offensive rebounds that led to 18 second-chance points, and 29 points off turnovers.
Azayah Garrison came up with a steal in the waning seconds of the first quarter, dishing it off to Amber Washington for the layup to send the game into the second quarter with the Tigers leading, 14-7. Washington then started the second quarter with a pull-up jumper before Mia Fuller made it 14-11 with a driving layup. Trinity Brittingham and Haley Downin hit back-to-back three-pointers to draw to within 20-17, before the Wildcats scored the final three points of the quarter, trailing 28-22 at the halftime break. The Wildcats won the second quarter, 15-14.
But then the Tigers scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take a 36-22 lead. Amber Washington hit a three-pointer to make it 38-29 with 3:41 to play, but then the Tigers went on an 8-1 run to end the quarter, taking a 47-30 lead into the final frame.
Holy Family opened the game up with a 12-0 run in the early going of the fourth quarter, taking a 66-35 lead with 5:27 to play before settling on the final score of 85-48. The Tigers scored 38 points in the fourth quarter.
Amber Washington led the Wildcats with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, adding five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Trinity Brittingham hit four three-pointers and finished with 14 points, adding a game-high four blocked shots as well. Azayah Garrison scored five points while adding five assists, three steals, and three rebounds. Daja Claiborne led the team with six rebounds.
The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, hosting Caldwell for a CACC cross-divisional contest. The Wildcats and Cougars are set for a 1:00 p.m. opening tip-off.
