Bowling Defeats Bryant to Claim Third Place at Griffin Baker Classic

LIMERICK, Pa. - - For the second weekend in a row, the Wilmington University bowling team went into bracket play as the top team in the tournament, this time leading 16 teams at the Griffin Baker Classic on Saturday and Sunday at the Bowlero.

The Wildcats dropped the matchup to get to the championship this weekend, but bounced back to defeat Bryant to claim third place overall.

On Saturday, the Wildcats went 1-4 in head-to-head matches, but finished second overall in total pinfall. In five Baker matches, the Wildcats collected 4,737 pins, good enough for a 189.5 match game average. They were only 20 pins behind the leader after five matches, as Belmont Abbey had a 4,757 total pinfall on Saturday.

The Wildcats then came out on Saturday and defeated LIU, 958-905, and Caldwell, 873-846, while jumping over Belmont Abbey and into first place in the overall standings.

Facing Belmont Abbey for a place in the championship game, the Wildcats came out hot with a 230-197 victory in the first game of the best-of-seven match. But Belmont Abbey came back and won the next two games before the Wildcats tied the match, 2-2, with a 180-149 win in game four. Belmont Abbey went on to win the next two games, however, taking the match from the Wildcats, 4-2.

Now in the third-place match, the Wildcats came out fast against Bryant, winning the first two games. Bryant cut the deficit in half with a win in game three, but then the Wildcats closed out the victory with a 180-139 win in game four and a 223-148 victory in game five to close out the match.

Delaware State defeated Belmont Abbey, 4-0, to claim the Griffin Baker Classic Championship on Sunday.

The Wildcats are off this weekend and return to action when they host the Wildcat DII Invitational starting on Friday, February 16. The three-day tournament will be hosted at Bowlerama, in New Castle, Delaware.
