HILLBURN, N.Y. - - Dominican scored five straight goals late in the second half to comeback and defeat the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team, 17-15, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Torne Valley Complex.
The Wildcats (4-7, 2-3 CACC) held a 9-8 lead at the half and led 14-12 as late as 13:21 before the Chargers (4-3, 4-0 CACC) made their late game comeback.
With the game tied 12-12, the Wildcats scored back-to-back goals from Lashay Ross and Megan Card to take a 14-12 lead with 15:05 to play. But Dominican scored with 13:20 showing on the clock before tying the game with 9:56 to play. The Chargers' run continued with the go-ahead goal with 7:36 remaining before adding two more goals to take a 17-14 lead with 1:45 to play.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the early going before the Chargers battled back with five straight goals in the first half to take a 5-4 lead. La'Dae Boykin scored back-to-back goals to put the Wildcats back in front, 6-5, but the Chargers answered right back with three consecutive goals for an 8-6 advantage. Card, Gabby Spalt, and Ross scored the final three goals of the half to send the Wildcats into the break leading 9-8.
Dominican scored the first two goals of the second half before the Wildcats answered with three straight for the 12-10 lead. Dominican tied the game once more, 12-12, before the Ross and Card put the visitors back in front, 14-12, with 15:05 showing on the clock.
Ross led the Wildcats with five goals on six shots, adding two draw controls and a ground ball as well. Card, Spalt, and Boykin all scored hat tricks for the Wildcats with Boykin adding three assists for six points. Card added two assists for five points while adding a team high four draw controls.
Zameria Jones led the team with four ground balls while Christina Ziegler led the way with two caused turnovers. Maddie Hurm made 16 saves on 33 shots faced while Dominican's Cara Moran stopped four of 19 shots faced.
The Wildcats will look to end their two-game skid when they return to action on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening draw against Chestnut Hill is set for 4:00 p.m.
