NEWARK, Del. – Another hot start for the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team led them to a 22-9 win over Holy Family for their fourth straight victory Tuesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
With her eight assists in today's game, redshirt sophomore Delaney Steele broke the single game program record of assists with her pass to Brooke Siebert in the second half. She surpassed Liz Case who set the record back in 2013 with seven assists. Steele also had seven assists on Saturday against Nyack.
The Wildcats (7-6, 4-1 CACC) started out hot from the opening draw, as they got on the board first just 2:53 into the first half on a pass from Taylor Lambeth who caught Maddie Day in the middle for an open shot. Within the next 10 minutes of the game, Wilmington scored seven goals to get out to an 8-0 lead with 18:24 still to play before halftime. Holy Family would net their first goal of the game a minute later, but Delaney Steele found Brooke Siebert flashing down the middle to start another four-goal run for the Wildcats.
The Tigers would score back-to-back goals to make it a nine-goal game, 12-3, with 1:31 left before the half, but Siebert was able to get one more for the Wildcats with 55 seconds left to play to take a 13-3 lead into halftime.
Holy Family was able to make it a nine-goal game again with 16:38 left to play in regulation with a score of 16-7, but Taylor Lambeth would net her fifth goal of the game to give the Wildcats the 10-goal lead back just 2:06 later. Wilmington would score five more goals in the half, as the Tigers scored the final two of the contest to finish the game, 22-9.
Taylor Lambeth led the team with a career-high six goals scored and dished out one assist. Brooke Siebert finished with five goals and one assist, as Delaney Steele finished with two goals and eight assists. Today's game was Steele's third straight game with 10 points.
Lashay Ross had three goals and one assist, while Maris Allen, Mariah Spencer, and Maddie Day all scored two goals. Brooke Siebert also tied the record for draw controls in a game, grabbing 14 in the game. She tied teammate Lashay Ross' mark of 14 set last year at Chestnut Hil.
Maddie Hurm got the win in goal, as she made four saves on seven shots, while freshman Tori Grubowski had four saves.
WilmU outshot the Tigers, 40-21, in the contest, and won 21 draw controls to Holy Family's, 12.
Wilmington travels to Caldwell for their next game this Saturday to take on the Cougars. Opening draw is slated for 2:00 p.m.
