ORLANDO, Fla. - - Make it eight straight for the Wilmington University cheerleading team, as the Wildcats captured the 2019 Universal Cheerleaders Association Division II Small Coed National Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports on Saturday night.

No strangers to the spotlight, the Wildcats have won the Division II Small Coed National Championship every year since 2012, this year beating five other programs that advanced to the final round.

The seven-time defending National Champion Wildcats advanced through the semifinals with a field of 12 programs entering the weekend. Advancing in first place through the semifinals, the Wildcats then defeated Drury University (Missouri), the Florida Institute of Technology, McKendree University (Illinois), Slippery Rock University (Pennsylvania), and Trine University (Indiana).

"Winning eight straight is amazing but winning this championship with this team was something different," third year head coach Ashley Mundy said. "They continued to push themselves and each other day in and day out to get us to today. Throughout the season, they've made it known to the coaching staff that they were determined and today made it known to everyone else that they were unstoppable".

Following Wilmington's first place finish, Drury finished second followed by Slippery Rock in third place.

The Wildcats will now perform their championship routine in front of an ESPN production to be played on the ESPN networks in the coming months.
