Playing as visitors on its home field due to weather conditions this week, the Wilmington University softball team dropped a pair of 2-1 contests against Holy Family, with game two ending on a walk-off hit to earn the sweep at Asbury Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Holy Family (3-1, 3-1 CACC) scored twice in the bottom of the third inning in game one, and twice in the bottom of the seventh in game two to take the CACC doubleheader from the Wildcats (11-10, 2-4 CACC).
The Tigers hit three doubles in the bottom of the third inning of game one, jumping out to a 2-0 lead through three full frames. Becca Stanley launched her second home run of the season to lead off the top of the fifth inning, but the Wildcats couldn't scratch across another run in the inning.
The Wildcats outhit the Tigers in game one, 6-3, but stranding seven runners on base through the first contest. The Wildcats left a runner at third base in the second inning, runners at first in the third, fourth, fifth, a runner at second in the sixth, and runners on second and third in the seventh.
With two outs and the bases empty, Chelsea Botsch walked to put the tying run on in the top of the seventh. Kelsey Doherty followed with a double to left center to put Botsch on third but Tiger starter Koreen Orozco buckled down to record the third out and win the game.
The Wildcats jumped out to the early lead in game two, scoring a single run in the top of the third. With two outs and Taylor Rizzotte on first, Doherty hit her second double of the day to left center, chasing Rizzotte home from first.
Botsch held the Tigers off the board throughout the second game, leaving a pair of runners on base in the fourth as the only true threat; until the seventh inning.
The Tigers led off the bottom of the seventh with a single before the tying run moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Jennifer Trapp than doubled in the tying run before an Orozco single brought home the winning run, 2-1, for the sweep.
Doherty collected both of the Wildcats' hits in game two, while batting 4-for-7 with two doubles and an RBI in the doubleheader. Botsch struck out nine batters on the afternoon, appearing for 3.2 innings in relief in game one before tossing all 6.1 innings in game two.
The Wildcats return to CACC play on Thursday when they host Philadelphia for another conference doubleheader at Asbury Field. The first pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
