SINKING SPRING, Pa. - - The Wilmington University women's bowling team started its 2017-18 season on Saturday, going 2-3 in baker matches at the Bud Whitman Memorial tournament hosted by Kutztown University at Berks Lane.
The Wildcats got off to a host start for the season, winning their first two matches of the year. The team finished 14th overall with an 858.2 match average, collecting 4291 pins throughout the day.
The season started with a 912-854 victory over Molloy before setting a new program record for a baker match in a 943-850 victory over NCAA Division I Howard.
But then the Wildcats ran into tough competition to close out the afternoon, dropping matches to Roberts Wesleyan, 842-738, host Kutztown, 936-845, and NCAA Division I Delaware State, 907-853.
Four of the Wildcats' point totals set on Saturday rank in the top four in the record books, for a program only in their second season of competition. All five scores landed in the Top 10.
Saint Francis (Pa.) led the tournament with 4950 total pins on Saturday, going 4-1 on the day. LIU Brooklyn was the only team to go a perfect 5-0 on the day, ranking second with 4944 total pins.
The tournament continues on Sunday, as each team will compete in five traditional matches. The Wildcats will square off against Chestnut Hill, Felician, Coppin State, Adelphi, and Franklin Pierce.
