
HOOKSETT, N.H. - - The Wilmington University women's soccer team hung tough with nationally ranked No. 10 Southern New Hampshire, but the Penmen came out on top, 3-1, on Friday night inside Mark A. Ouellette Stadium.
Each team recorded five shots on goal in the game, but the Penmen (2-0-1) was able to find the back of the net on three of them while the Wildcats only had one answer in eight total shots. The Penmen outshot the Wildcats, 18-8, for the match in total.
The Penmen scored on a rebound opportunity in the 24th minute and then quickly made it 2-0 with another goal in the 29th minute.
Alyssa Ruggeri scored her third goal of the season off an assist from freshman Cadance Bell in the 34th minute, cutting the Wildcats deficit to 2-1. Brianna Wons put a shot on frame in the 38th minute, but the attempt was saved as the game went into the halftime break with the Penmen leading, 2-1.
Southern New Hampshire was able to find the back of the yet again minute way through the second half, taking a 3-1 lead in the 64th minute.
The Wildcats turned up the pressure, getting a shot on goal from Jordan Siok in the 76th minute and another by Ellie Lawrence in the 80th minute. Maria Leguizamon had a shot saved in the 84th minute and Alyssa Ruggeri's final chance was high in the 90th minute as the Penmen secured the nonconference victory.
Arianna Myers made two saves for the Wildcats. The Wildcats held a 2-1 advantage in corners in the game.
The Wildcats remain in New Hampshire for the weekend, as they head across town and prepare for Saint Anselm on Sunday afternoon. The opening kick-off against the Hawks is set for 1:00 p.m.
