Women’s Tennis Claims CACC Regular Season Title with 6-1 Victory over Post

WATERBURY, Conn. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference over Post at the Edgewood Bath & Tennis complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats (6-0, 5-0 CACC) won all three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches to stay unbeaten on the season. With the win, coupled with USciences' win over Goldey-Beacom, the Wildcats clinched the 2021 CACC Regular Season Championship and will be the No. 1 seed in the CACC Tournament at the end of the month.

The combination of Marley Trifunovic and Valetina Ivankovic started the winning at No. 2 doubles, winning 6-2. Larize Nel and Fenna Swaan gave the Wildcats the doubles' point with a 6-3 win at No. 3. Jess Purdy and Neus Ramos Moreno made it a clean sweep in doubles, needing the tiebreak to win but eventually winning 7-6 (7-4). The Wildcats have won every doubles match of the season.

Larize Nel started the singles matches with a 6-0 and 6-0 win at No. 6 singles followed by Marley Trifunovic winning 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Neus Ramos Moreno gave the Wildcats the team win with a 6-0 and 6-2 victory at No. 2 before Begona Gomar made it 5-0 with a 6-2 and 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. The Eagles picked their point with a 6-1 and 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles, but then the Wildcats closed out the match with a third set tiebreaker victory at No. 3.

Valentina Ivankovic won the first set, 7-5, but dropped the second set to send it into the tiebreaker. Ivankovic won the tiebreaker, 10-7, to win the match and give the Wildcats the 6-1 victory.

The Wildcats close out the fall regular season with a crosstown rivalry match against Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats will be the home team at the Delcastle Tennis Center with first service slated for 3:00 p.m.
