PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - The defensive side of the ball let the Wilmington University baseball team down as USciences swept a nonconference doubleheader, 9-4 and 5-4, from the Wildcats on Friday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field.

The Wildcats (25-17) committed three errors in the opener and three more errors in the nightcap, allowing the Devils (13-25) to steal two games.

Dan Hyatt cut into the Wildcats' deficit in the top of the fifth, hitting a two run double to score both Rocky Ferrier and Frank Nigro, bringing the Wildcats to within 4-3. But the Devils answered right back in the bottom of the inning scoring the first run with three hits in the first four batters of the inning. An error extended the inning and allowed four more unearned runs to cross the plate to put the game away, 9-3. Hyatt added a sac fly to center in the top of the seventh to bring the final scored to 9-4.

Nigro went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored for the Wildcats while Hyatt batted 2-for-3 with all four RBI. Ferrier also went 2-for-3 in the opener. Justin Mears fell to 2-2 on the season in allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits in 3.2 innings.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats scored two runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to comeback and hold a 4-2 lead.

After the Devils scored twice to take the lead in the bottom of the third, the Wildcats answered with two runs of their own in the fourth. Jesse Long and Nick Macey walked to start the inning before Julian Kurych moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Mike Annone then hit a two-run single to right to tie the game.

Hyatt doubled to put runners on second and third in the top of the fifth and Macey singled back up the middle to plate both runners for the 4-2 lead after four full innings.

But the defense let the Wildcats down once again in the bottom of the fifth, as the Devils tied the game on a wild pitch and an RBI double. Another wild pitch put the home team ahead, 5-4, in the inning.

With their final two at-bats, the Wildcats only received a one-out single to left by Brad Scull in the sixth, but he was left stranded at first base.

Chuck Delagol falls to 5-2 on the season with the loss, allowing five runs (four unearned) on three hits and four walks in 4.1 innings pitched. He struck out five batters in the outing. Hyatt was the only Wildcats to collect multiple hits in the nightcap, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
