Golf Starts 2020 Spring Season at Saint Leo Invitational

DALE CITY, Fla. - - The Wilmington University golf team started its 2020 spring season at the Saint Leo Invitational, finishing 12th overall after three rounds at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.

The Wildcats shot rounds of 320-316-329 for a 965 total.

Senior Braden McKay and junior Enrique Valverde led the Wildcats by tying in 54th overall, each shooting a 235 (+19) in the three rounds. McKay had the best round in the final round on Tuesday, moving up three spots to finish in a tie for 54th. McKay posted rounds of 78-79-78 for his 235 (+19).

Valderde shots rounds of 78-76-81 for his 235 (+19). The junior finished with nine birdies in the tournament, finishing tied for 19th overall in the tournament.

Senior Arvy Shongwe finished tied for 66th overall, shooting rounds of 82-77-85 for a 244 (+28). Freshman Ali Ladak placed 73rd overall with scores of 82-84-85 for a 251 (+35). Freshman Tyler Cleaves rounded out the Wildcats in 76th overall, shooting rounds of 87-87-89 for a 263 (+47).

Host Saint Leo hung on late to win the tournament, one stroke ahead of Keiser. Saint Leo finished with an 867 (+3) while Keiser was one stroke away at 868 (+4) after three rounds. Nova Southeastern posted a score of 871 (+7) to round out the top three.

Individually, Nova Southeastern's Tomas Millet Shot a 70 (-2) on Tuesday to win the tournament by a stroke. He had rounds of 68-70-70 for a 208 (-8). Saint Leo's Alberto Castagnara finished with rounds of 68-68-73 for a 209 (-7) for second place.

The Wildcats are back in action on Monday, March 9 when they travel to the J. Ralph Hargett Invitational hosted by Wingate University in Monroe, North Carolina. The two-day, three-round tournament will be played at the Stonebridge Golf Club.
