Women’s Basketball Falls to Saint Rose, 84-40

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's basketball team dropped a nonconference matchup to the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights, 84-40, Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats' (0-2) first look of the game came from an Amber Washington jump shot. Fatou Ndao was able to secure the offensive board, but the Wildcats could not convert on the second chance. It took until the 5:34 mark in the first period for either team to score, as the Golden Knight's Kaileigh Hunt made one of two free throws. The Wildcats scored their first basket with 3:43 left in the first period from an Amber Washington layup. Daja Claiborne connected on a jump shot from a feed by Washington 40 seconds later, as Washington and Claiborne had the lone baskets for the Wildcats in the first. The Golden Knights were on top 17-4 at the end of the first period.

The Wildcats have outscored in the second period 21 points to nine. Washington opened the Wildcats scoring from a second-chance effort. Washington could grab an offensive board and make a shot from beyond the ark. Washington then scored the following points for the Wildcats with another three-point shot. Jade Roberts added a three-point shot at the buzzer from an assist by Tye Queen.

Amber Washington came out in the second half scoring on back-to-back Wildcat possessions. Washington made a jump shot and a layup two minutes into the half. The clock was down to 3:36 in the third period when Azayah Garrison added two points for the Wildcats with a layup. The Wildcats closed out the third period with back-to-back layups from Daja Claiborne and Amaja Mack.

Daja Claiborne opened up the scoring for either squad in the fourth period with a jump shot from a feed from Jade Roberts. Jade Roberts then scored off a layup from a pass from Washington with 6:47 left in the game. Skylar Parris was fouled beyond the arc and converted all three of her free throws with 6:06 left in the game.

Amber Washington finished with a game-high 19 points. Washington also added nine rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Daja Claiborne finished with eight points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Jade Roberts added six points, six rebounds, and two assists.

They will be on the road for the first time this season as they will take on Division I Delaware State in Dover, Delaware, on Tuesday, November 15; tip-off is set for 7 PM.
