NEWARK, Del. - - Director of Athletics Dr. Stefanie Whitby and the Wilmington University Athletics Department would like to welcome Sam Cain to Wildcat Country, as he accepted the role of head coach of the women's soccer program.
"I am honored to take on the role of head women's soccer coach at Wilmington University," Sam Cain said. "I extend my gratitude to Director of Athletics Dr. Stefanie Whitby and all members of the Athletic Department for placing their trust in me and providing this exceptional opportunity. I am eager to begin my new role and enthusiastic about what lies ahead for the Wilmington women's soccer team."
Sam Cain comes to Newark following a successful tenure at Iowa Lakes Community College in Spencer, Iowa. He helped lead the Lakers to a program record 14-7-1 last season, reaching as high as No. 8 nationally in the NJCAA. The team won the Region 11 Championship and advanced to the North Plains District Championship last season.
"We are thrilled to welcome Sam to the Wilmington coaching roster as the head women's soccer coach", Director of Athletics Dr. Stefanie Whitby said. "He built a strong program in a short time at Iowa Lakes, and we are excited to welcome him back to the East Coast where he has ties in the CACC. We're looking forward to the future of the women's soccer program."
In addition to his three years as head coach at Iowa Lakes, Cain spent time with the Northwest Iowa Soccer Club, and the Greenwich Soccer Association and Roberts Sports Management team in Connecticut.
Cain is no stranger to the CACC, graduating from Post University in 2010 and helping the Eagles to the 2008 CACC Tournament Championship as a student-athlete. He was an all-state player during his time at Weston High School in Connecticut.
Sam Cain will arrive in Delaware and help guide the women's soccer team through the rest of its non-championship spring season starting April 1.
