Wildcats Claim Second Shutout of Young Season; Defeat Chestnut Hill, 7-0

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team has started the season with back-to-back sweeps as it opened Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a 7-0 victory over Chestnut Hill on Homecoming Saturday at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (2-0, 1-0 CACC) won all three doubles matches for the first point of the match and then cruised in five of the six singles matches to claim the victory. Only one match went to a third-set tiebreak, but the Wildcats were able to pull that off as well for the sweep.

Fenna Swaan and Larize Nel started the doubles matches off with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles before Neus Ramos Moreno and Valentina Ivankovic captured the point with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Jess Purdy and Marley Trifunovic made it a clean sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Larize Nel kept her strong start to the season going with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles before Valentina Ivankovic gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles. Begona Gomar gave the Wildcats the match with a win at No. 2 singles, 6-0 and 6-1, and all that was left was the shutout.

Marley Trifunovic kept the ball rolling with a 6-3 and 7-5 victory at No. 5 singles and then Jess Purdy gave the Wildcats a 6-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3.

Neus Ramos Moreno was in a fight at No. 1 singles, dropping the first set, 6-3, but battling back to take the second set, 7-6, needing the 7-4 win in the tiebreak. Now in the third set tiebreak, Neus Ramos Moreno completed the comeback with a 10-8 victory.

The Wildcats take to the road for the first time in dual matches this year, as they travel to USciences on Wednesday afternoon. The Devils defeated Dominican, 7-0, on Saturday as well. The first serve is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Hamlin Tennis Center.
