Volleyball Falls to Molloy and Adelphi in Nonconference Trimatch

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team played two matches inside the Center for Recreation on the campus of Adelphi University on Saturday, falling to Molloy and the host Panthers in straight sets.

Set scores against Molloy were 25-22, 25-18, and 25-21.

Set scores against Adelphi were 25-18, 25-14, and 25-13.

Match against Molloy:
The Wildcats had 12 total blocks in the match but only collected 25 kills and allowed 10 aces in the day's opener.

Tied 20-20 in the first set, the Lions (7-4) rattled off three straight points to take the lead. Alex Serna and Karla Nunez-Rivera collected kills but then Molloy scored twice to win, 25-22. Molloy raced out to an 15-8 lead before the Wildcats closed the gap to 19-16. The Lions used a 6-2 run to end the set, including the final three points, 25-18. The Wildcats then tied the third set, 17-17, but the Lions went on a run again, scoring six straight to open a 23-17 lead. The Wildcats saved three match points, but a Lion point end the game, 25-21.

Eliza Schneider led the Wildcats with six kills while Crystal Creek added five. Shannen Litten had a solo block and five block assists while Alex Serna added a solo block and three block assists. Gabby Barth led with 10 digs while Claudia Melendez had eight assists and nine digs.

Match against Adelphi:
In the nightcap, the Wildcats hit negative .015 for the match, putting down 17 kills while committing 18 errors. On the other side of the net, the Panthers (6-6) put down 44 kills while hitting .364 for the match.

The Panthers opened an 18-10 lead in the first set before the Wildcats clawed to within five at 20-15 and again at 22-17. But the Panthers scored three of the final four points to win the first set, 25-18. An 8-0 run in the second gave Adelphi a 14-4 lead. The Wildcats saved three set points before the Panthers finished off the second game, 25-14. Another 8-0 run in the third set gave the Panthers a 12-6 lead before another 8-1 spurt pushed the Adelphi lead to 21-11. The Panthers scored the final three points of the match to win, 25-13.

Eliza Schneider and Alex Serna led with five kills each while Serna hit .714 on seven swings without committing an error. Cam Justus dished out seven assists while Morgan Daniels had five digs and two aces.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with their next match, as they host Georgian Court on Tuesday night. The first serve against the Lions is set for 7:00 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.
